Petak Award: Call for Nominations!

SECM is asking for nominations for the Petak Award, which is conferred for the best ASPA 2012 conference paper on emergency or crisis management. If you know someone who presented a paper on emergency or crisis management at the 2012 ASPA National Conference in Las Vegas, and who would be interested in being considered for this award, please invite that author(s) to email his or her (their) paper to Prof. Rick Sylves at sylves@udel.edu .

Self nominations are encouraged. Single and multiple author papers are eligible. It is through the Petak Award that the Section on Emergency and Crisis Management recognizes the important scholarly and professional contributions of ASPA members. We prefer that applicants be members of SECM, however, non-SECM members are welcome to apply. The winner will be announced at the 2013 SECM meeting and dinner in New Orleans!

Assistant Professor of Public Administration

The Hauptmann School for Public Affairs (HSPA) at Park University proudly celebrates thirty years of educating leaders prepared to act for the common good and for the preservation of human dignity world-wide. HSPA invites applications for a faculty position (rank of assistant professor) to lead the Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) concentration in the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program. This is a full-time, tenure-track position beginning August 2012.

The MPA degree is a cross-sector liberal-arts based degree which focuses on integrating theory and practice across the curriculum. The Hauptmann School, located in the heart of a dynamic renaissance city, is an ideal setting for local faculty and student engagement with this vibrant community.

Candidates will be expected to teach courses at the graduate level, primarily in disaster and emergency management, with some additional teaching in public administration/public affairs as needed. Applicants must be comfortable in the online learning environment, and must be able to mentor faculty.

Duties include advising students in the area, enlisting and assigning adjunct faculty to teach in the DEM area, developing program curriculum, reviewing syllabi, reviewing online courses, mentoring faculty, fostering contacts with professional organizations, and actively promoting the program, Duties also include conducting periodic reviews of the effectiveness of the program as per relevant accreditation bodies and assessment needs.

A Ph.D. or D.P.A. degree in disaster and emergency management or related field or doctorate in public administration, public affairs, sociology, along with specialization in disaster and emergency management, is required. The candidate must also have the ability to engage in scholarship and service. The Search Committee expects serious candidates to have experience in the following areas:

•Teaching courses in disaster and emergency management at the graduate level,

•Teaching adult learners, and

•Using Internet-enhanced delivery methods.

Cross-sector and interdisciplinary teaching experience, along with previous administrative experience is desired. The successful candidate will have demonstrated presentation/publication/work in the area, as well as public service experience.

Also required are strong oral and written communication skills, an excellent understanding of education principles and methodologies, exceptional leadership and organizational abilities, and a solid ability to deal with ambiguity in a rapidly changing and exciting higher education environment.

Review of applications begin February 15, 2012 and continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, names and contact information of three references, and other relevant documents.

ASPA 2012 Conference

“Redefining Public Service Through Civic Engagement” 

Businesses, nonprofits, and citizen groups have become essential partners in government, contributing resources to community problem solving and public service delivery. Recently, the rapid expansion of technology and the development of social media has informed and empowered individuals and is changing the relationships between governments and citizens. The 2012 conference will bring together government and nonprofit professionals, scholars, students, and citizen groups to learn what is happening in various areas and obtain skills that they can implement in their communities, states and countries. Over 400 public service experts will be on hand to address concerns encountered in the work place and offer creative solutions. Through keynote presentations, SuperSessions, workshops, panels roundtable discussions and poster presentations attendees will experience first-hand leadership skills to elevate the public service profession.
